Martin T. Evans, M.D.
Background
Martin grew up in Alabama and was graduated from Tulane University,
double majoring in biology and chemistry.
Upon moving to Richmond in 1980, Martin practiced general and vascular surgery at HealthSouth
Medical Center and served as Chief of Staff there from 1994-1996, in addition to roles such as
Chairman of the Credentials Committee. At the McGuire Clinic in Richmond, Martin has been Director
of the Vascular Laboratory and a member of the Board of Directors. Since 1981, he has also been
active as a reviewer of surgical care and Advisor for Medical Affairs for Blue Cross-Blue Shield of
Virginia. When he joined Surgical Associates in 1999, he brought with him outstanding leadership
and experience in development of our own Vascular Lab program for carotid artery and peripheral
vascular surveillance, and has been an active member of the Development Committee for the Vascular
Center of Excellence at JW and CMC. As a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Martin has
given over 30 presentations at national and local meetings concerning a diverse range of topics and
has published 3 textbook chapters. A leader in endovascular surgery in Richmond, he has been a
designated instructor for J and J International Systems in the use of the Palmaz vascular stent and
has proctored surgeons in its use across the country.
Medical Training
Martin received his medical degree from Tulane University. He trained in general surgery as a
resident at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, where he received the Tulane Medical School
Teaching Award, and completed a vascular surgical fellowship at the University of Florida in
Gainesville. He also served as an Assistant Professor of general and vascular surgery at the
University of Florida from 1979-1980 and also assistant director of emergency medical services
during that same interval. Since 1980 he has held the position of assistant clinical professor of
general and vascular surgery at the Medical College of Virginia.
Personal Notes
In his spare time, Martin and his wife Johanna enjoy relaxing near the water and also snow skiing.
